Day 17 - June 22 - The Smiths had been having second thoughts about their ability to handle both the physical stress of the trip and the potential problems for their car, based on the experiences the others had gone through. They decided not to go along on the T Tour but will instead be driving their modern car to many of the same places planned for the trip. Four of the Ts left Portland for Astoria and the coast around noon. Daid Johnson and the Capps got their car back together and took I-5 directly north in hopes for a brief visit with their sons in the Seattle area before we head into Canada. The drive to Astoria was over a good Model T road, with pleasaont scenery, moderate traffic and enough hills to be challenging. A delicious seafood dinner celebrated the end of a day with no breakdowns. The bridge at Astoria is wide and high, crossing the Columbia River as it passes out into the ocean and we watched the sun set behind it over dinner.
